If you're having problems with your Surface Headphones, you can reset them to the original factory settings or reset their firmware. The type of reset you should use depends on what kind of problem you're having.

Type of reset

Use when

Factory reset

You can't connect your Surface Headphones to your PC or phone after a few tries.

Firmware reset

  • The touch area or buttons stop responding.

  • Your default digital assistant isn’t activated when you tap and hold the touch area.

  • The LED turns amber.

Reset your headphones to factory settings

When you reset your headphones, any pairing information, equalizer adjustments, and languages settings are removed and your headphones go back to the original factory settings. After you reset them, you'll need to set up your headphones again. There are two ways you can reset your headphones.

1. Use the power button

Press and hold the power button (#3 in the diagram below) for 20 seconds until you hear that your headphones have been reset to the factory defaults.

2. Use the Surface app

First, connect your headphones to your Windows 10/11 PC using the included USB cable, or connect your headphones wirelessly over Bluetooth to your iOS device, Android device, or PC (if you can).

  • On a Windows 10/11 PC: Open the Surface app, then select Surface Headphones > Device information. Under Factory reset, select Reset now, and then select Reset now to confirm.

  • On an iOS device or Android device: Open the Surface app, then tap Account > Surface Headphones > Device information. After that, select Reset your Surface Headphones > Reset now to confirm.

Reset the firmware on your headphones

Here's how to reset the firmware:

  1. Plug the USB cable into your Windows 10/11 PC or into a USB power adapter (not included) for a wall outlet.

  2. Press and hold the power button on your headphones.

  3. While still holding down the power button, connect the USB-C end to your headphones.

  4. Release the power button.

When you reset your headphones, any pairing information for devices you added, equalizer adjustments, and language settings are removed. Your headphones go back to the original factory settings, and you'll need to set up your headphones again.

Note: When you reset your Surface Headphones 2+, they’ll still be paired with your Microsoft Surface USB Link because they’re paired together at the factory.

There are two ways you can reset your headphones.
