Reset your Windows 10 local account password

If you’ve forgotten or lost your Windows 10 password for a local account and need to sign back in to your device, the below options might help you get up and running.

  • If you want instead to reset a Microsoft account password, see How to reset your Microsoft account password.
  • Windows 10, version 1803 and beyond
  • If you added security questions when you set up your local account for Windows 10, version 1803 or later, here’s how to reset your password.
  • On the sign-in screen, enter an incorrect password to open the option to reset the password. Select Reset password, answer your security questions, and then enter a new password. Sign in as usual.
  • Windows 10, before version 1803
  • For any version of Windows 10 earlier than version 1803, there are no security questions, and you will be unable to recover your password. We also are unable to recover your password. The next step is to reset your device so that you can choose a new one.
  • Reset your device to reset your password
  • Before resetting, you’ll want to back up your personal files. You can save them to a USB drive, SD card, or external hard drive, or you can save them in the cloud with OneDrive. For more info, see Back up and restore your files.
  • For more about how to reset your device, see the reset your PC info in Recovery options in Windows 10.
