How to get the update

Surface updates are released in stages – not every Surface will receive the update at the same time, but it’ll be delivered to all devices. If you haven’t received an update, see Install Surface and Windows updates.

Known issues and additional information about Surface Book 2

We are listening. Quality is a top priority, and we want to keep you informed about issues impacting customers. The following is a known issue:

Symptom Workaround
After you install the November 27, 2018—KB4467682 (OS Build 17134.441) update, you may see a blue or black screen with the following error message:

"System thread exception not handled.”

A resolution for this issue will be available in the December 2018 security update release.

For customers who are currently experiencing this issue, please follow these instructions Troubleshoot blue screen errors and uninstall KB4467682.

 

You experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • You receive the BitLocker recovery key entry screen after you restart your Surface Book 2 13” NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050.  
  • You receive the following message after you enter your BitLocker recovery key and sign back in to Windows:

    “Have you experienced BitLocker Recovery unexpectedly?”
     
  • You may notice that the Surface UEFI driver appears with a warning  symbol under Firmware in Device Manager.

The Surface BitLocker Protector Check tool is now available to verify that your BitLocker settings are properly configured and to help ensure that future updates go smoothly on your device.


Here's how to use the Surface BitLocker Protector Check tool:

  1. Download and install the Surface BitLocker Protector Check tool.
  2. Open the Surface BitLocker Protector Check tool by typing Surface BitLocker Protector Check in the search box on the taskbar, and then select it from the list.
  3. Follow one of the actions below depending on the message you receive in the Command Prompt window:
Message Action

"This device’s BitLocker settings do not require any changes."

 

No further action is needed. This device’s BitLocker settings do not require any changes.

Press Enter to exit the Surface BitLocker Protector Check tool.

"Please dock your Surface Book 2 into the base."

 

Attach the display (sometimes called the “Clipboard”) to the keyboard. If it is already connected, detach, clean the connectors, and then reattach.

Press Enter to exit the Surface BitLocker Protector Check tool.

"BitLocker has been temporarily suspended.

Reboot is now required. This tool will automatically resume from rebooting."

 

This device’s BitLocker settings require changes.

Press Enter so that your device reboots and starts applying the changes.

The Surface BitLocker Protector Check tool will automatically resume after rebooting.

"Your BitLocker recovery key is: <your BitLocker recovery key number>

Please record this in a safe location.

Reboot is now required. This tool will automatically resume from rebooting."

 

Print or write down the BitLocker recovery key, in case needed.

Press Enter so that your device reboots and begins applying the changes.

The Surface BitLocker Protector Check tool will automatically resume after rebooting.

"The BitLocker settings on this device have been successfully fixed."

 

No further action is needed. The BitLocker settings on this device have been successfully fixed.

Press Enter to exit the Surface BitLocker Protector Check tool.
