When you draw, resize, or move a shape or other object in Excel, you can set it so that it aligns or "snaps" to the nearest intersection in the grid (even if the grid isn't visible) or snaps to other shapes or objects. However, you can control the alignment and snap-to capabilities by turning them off.
Turn on the snap-to options in Excel for the web
Select the shape or other object. On the Shape Format tab, under Arrange, select Align.
Do one or both of the following actions:
- To snap shapes or other objects to the closest intersection of the grid, select Snap to Grid.
Gray highlighting indicates the option is selected. - To snap shapes or other objects to grid lines that go through the vertical and horizontal edges of other shapes or objects, select Snap to Shape.

Turn off the snap-to options
- Select the shape or other object. On the Shape Format tab, in the Arrange group, select Align.
- To turn off these options, select Snap to Grid or Snap to Shape.
The gray highlighting turns off.
