Surface device power states
Learn how to turn your Surface on, shut it down, restart and wake it, and put it into different power saving states. For general info about these power states and to learn how to change them, see Shut down, sleep, or hibernate your PC.
Turn on and wake
To turn on or wake your Surface, press the power button and wait a few seconds. To find out where the power button is located, find out which Surface model you have, then see the Features page for it.
On, off, sleep, and restart
Here’s a quick overview of the power states for Surface.
On or wake |
Press and release the power button on your Surface.Surface won’t turn on or start. If nothing happens, connect the power supply and press the power button again. If your Surface still doesn’t turn on, see |
Off or shut down |
Do either of the following:

Sleep |
Do any of the following:

Restart |
Select Start > Power > Restart. |
Force a shut down and restart your Surface |
Notes:

You can also press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, select Power in the lower-right corner, and choose Sleep, Shut down, or Restart.

From the desktop, press and hold (or right-click) the Start button in the lower-left corner, select Shut down or sign out, and choose an option.
Wake and unlock
There are several ways to wake your Surface:

Press any key on your Surface Type Cover or keyboard.

Press any key on your Surface Book, Surface Laptop Studio, or Surface Laptop keyboard.

Press and release the power button on your Surface.

Open the lid on your Surface and wait for the screen to turn on.

On your Surface Laptop Studio, in Stage or Studio mode, tap anywhere on the screen.
To unlock your Surface:

Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen or press a key.

At the sign-in screen, enter your password. Your Surface is now ready to use.Sign in to and out of your Surface.

Lock
To lock your Surface, do any of the following:

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and select Lock.

Press the Windows logo key + L.
-
Select Start , select your account picture, then select Lock.

If you don't use your Surface for several hours, it will hibernate. Hibernation is disabled on Surface Studio. |
