Bug #: 50003456 (SQL Hotfix)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release.

Symptoms

In Microsoft SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2012, or SQL Server 2014, you use the ALTER INDEX REBUILD statement during index maintenance on a clustered index table. When you do this, the clustered index table may take longer than you expect to be rebuilt.

Cause

This issue occurs when the clustered index table contains file stream data. When the clustered index table is rebuilt, unnecessary copy operations are performed on the file stream data. The unnecessary copy operations make the rebuild operation slower.

Each new cumulative update for SQL Server contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous cumulative update. Check out the latest cumulative updates for SQL Server:

Workaround

To work around this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Drop the clustered index. You can use the DROP INDEX statement to drop the clustered index. For more information about the DROP INDEX statement, visit the following Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Web site:

    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa258837(SQL.80).aspx

  2. Create a new clustered index. You can use the CREATE INDEX statement to create a new clustered index. For more information about the CREATE INDEX statement, visit the following MSDN Web site:

    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188783.aspx

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
