How to add a voice in Clipchamp: record your own voice, generate text to speech, import audio, or detach audio from a webcam recording.
Choose record or text to speech

Record your own voiceover
Personal accounts
- Open your video in Clipchamp.
- Select Record & create > Audio.
- If prompted, select Allow for microphone access.
- Choose the correct microphone source.
- Select the red Microphone button, record, then select Stop.
- Preview the recording.
- Select Retake recording or Save and edit.
The recording is added to the timeline and Your media.
Work or school accounts
- Open your video in Clipchamp.
- Select Record & create > Webcam.
- If prompted, select Allow for microphone access.
- Select Audio to switch to audio-only recording.
- Choose the correct microphone source.
- Select Microphone, record, select Stop, then select Next.
- Preview the recording.
- Select Retake recording or Save and edit.
In Clipchamp for work or school, recordings currently appear as MP4 files. To make an audio track, select the timeline clip, then select Audio > Detach or Detach audio in the property panel.

Generate a text-to-speech voice
- Open your video in Clipchamp.
- Select Record & create > Text to speech.
- Choose a Language.
- Choose a Voice. Select Hear this voice to preview it.
- Open Advanced settings to adjust pitch or pace.
- Type or paste your script.
- Select Preview, then select Save.
The voiceover is added to the timeline and Your media.
Notes:
- If your script exceeds the character limit, create multiple text-to-speech items.
- To edit a saved voiceover, select it on the timeline, open Text to speech, make changes, then select Save.
- GIF exports do not include audio. Export as video to keep the voiceover.

Import or detach existing audio
- To import audio: select Media > Import media, choose the audio file, then drag it to the timeline.
- To use phone audio: copy the file to your computer first, then import it.
- To detach webcam audio: add the webcam clip to the timeline, select it, then select Audio > Detach or Detach audio.
Fix microphone permissions or no audio
If you can't record, the mic level is flat, or the recording has no sound:
- When Clipchamp asks for microphone access, select Allow.
- In a browser, select the lock, microphone, or site settings icon in the address bar, set microphone access to Allow, then refresh Clipchamp.
- In Windows, go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone.
- Allow your browser or the Clipchamp Windows app to use the microphone.
- In the recorder, select the correct input device, such as your headset, built-in mic, or USB mic.
- If the level stays flat, unmute the mic, reconnect the device, close other recording or calling apps, then check Settings > System > Sound.
- After changing permissions or devices, refresh the browser or reopen the Clipchamp app.
- If recording is blocked on a work or school device, contact your IT administrator.
- If you still can't record, use Text to speech or import an audio file.
Edit and export
- Select the audio on the timeline to adjust Audio volume, Fade, or Speed in the property panel.
- Split audio on the timeline to move or remove sections.
- Press Delete to remove selected audio.
- Use captions or autocaptions to create captions or a transcript.
- Select Export, then choose a video resolution such as 480p, 720p, 1080p, or 4K.
