You cannot play MPEG2 video files that are streamed by a Windows 7 Home Basic Edition-based or Windows 7 Starter Edition-based digital media server

Applies to: Windows 7 Service Pack 1Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You configure a Windows 7 Home Basic Edition-based or Windows 7 Starter Edition-based computer to perform as a digital media server.
  • You use Windows Media Player to stream MPEG2 video files from the digital media server to a digital media receiver. You try to play the video files in Windows Media Player on the digital media receiver.
In this scenario, the digital media receiver does not play the video files.

Cause

This issue occurs because Windows Media Player on the digital media server converts the MPEG2 video files to the Windows Media Video (WMV) format. However, Windows Media Player in Windows 7 Home Basic Edition or in Windows 7 Starter Edition should stream MPEG2 video files without converting them to the WMV format.
