KB2974948 - FIX: SQL Server resource goes offline when you change password for service account in SQL Server 2012 or SQL Server 2014

Symptoms

Assume that you use Microsoft SQL Server 2012 or SQL Server 2014 failover cluster. When you change the password for service account by using SQL Server Configuration Manager or SQL Server WMI Provider on the non-owner node, SQL Server resource goes offline without any warning.

Resolution

The issue was first fixed in the following cumulative update of SQL Server.

Cumulative Update 11 for SQL Server 2012 SP1 /en-us/help/2975396

Workaround

To work around this issue, use services.msc, sc.exe, or Service Control API instead of SQL Server Configuration Manager or SQL Server WMI Provider to change the password.
