DNS server does not respond with IP address to a CNAME query for a delegated zone in Windows Server 2008 R2

Dotyczy: Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1Windows Server 2008 R2 DatacenterWindows Server 2008 R2 Standard

This article describes an issue that occurs when a Domain Name System (DNS) server responds to a CNAME query in Windows Server 2008 R2. A hotfix is available to resolve this issue. The hotfix has a prerequisite.

Symptoms

This issue occurs on a DNS server that uses the background zone loading feature to load DNS zones. When this issue occurs, the DNS service has to be restarted.

Note This issue does not occur after the DNS zone is completely loaded. However, it may take a long time to finish the loading.

Cause

This issue occurs because, when the DNS server tries to resolve host records for the delegated server, it only looks up the records that are loaded in memory.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the hotfix on the DNS server.
