Applies ToWord 2016

This article describes update 3178720 for Microsoft Word 2016 that was released on April 4, 2017. This update has a prerequisite.Be aware that the update on the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home. (How to determine?)

Improvements and fixes

This update fixes the following issues:

  • When you combine two documents, incorrect results are displayed if changes are to be appended to an existing document.

  • When you use Quick Parts in a document in Word 2016, the signatures are invalidated.

  • Assume that you run a macro to access document properties such as Paragraph, Styles, and Shapes in a document that has revisions in Word 2016. When you try to close the document, Word 2016 may crash.

  • Diacritics (such as accents or umlauts) on uppercase letters may be missing in certain zoom factors and fonts.

  • Microsoft Outlook 2016 crashes when it's running.

  • Arabic-Indic characters are used instead of Persian characters if the numbers locale and keyboard layout are set to Persian.

  • Footnote numbers don't appear as superscript characters in a document in Word 2016.Note This update only partially fixes this issue. Superscript characters now appear correctly on screen. However, in printed Word documents and in PDF files (printed and on-screen), superscript characters appear as subscript characters. A fix for this issue is scheduled for a future update.

  • Equations that are created in Equation 3.0 or MathType are incorrectly positioned, or text within these equations appears clipped at the top. Equations that are created through the native Word Equation feature are not affected by this issue.Note This update only partially fixes this issue in screen displays. To correct the screen display, install this update (KB3178720), go to File > Options > Advanced, locate the Display section, and make sure that the Use subpixel position to smooth fonts on screen option is selected. This update does not correct this issue in printed documents or in PDF files. A fix for this issue is scheduled for a future update.
