Applies ToWord 2016

This article describes update 4011039 for Microsoft Word 2016 that was released on September 5, 2017. This update has a prerequisite. Be aware that the update on the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home. (How to determine?)

Known issues in this update

After you install this update 4011039, you may encounter the following issues:

  • If you merge vertical cells in a table, the cell content disappears, and you can't select the merged cell.

  • If you open an existing document that has a table with merged cells, the cells are displayed as blank.

These issues occur only for those who receive Microsoft Office 2016 updates by using the Windows Installer (MSI) technology. If you have a Click-to-Run edition of Office, such as Office 365 Personal, you won't encounter these issues.

Workaround

As a workaround, you can uninstall this update, and your tables will return to normal. We anticipate releasing the fix for these issues in the next monthly update that's tentatively scheduled for October 3, 2017. For more information, see the following Microsoft article :

After installing KB 3213656 or KB 4011039, merged table cells don't work correctly in Word or Outlook

Resolution

To fix this issue, install October 3, 2017, update for Word 2016 (KB4011140).

Improvements and fixes

  • This update improves compatibility of Microsoft Word 2016 to allow real-time collaboration on cloud documents between the desktop client, iOS and Android.

  • This update fixes the following issues:

    • When you reply or forward an RTF email that contains right-to-left paragraphs with pictures, Outlook 2016 stops working.

    • When you open a document that's marked as Read-only recommended on a network location in Word 2016 and choose to open the document in the read-only mode, other users cannot open the same document as read/write.

How to download and install the update

This update is available for manual download and installation from the Microsoft Download Center.
