This article describes update 4011215 for Microsoft Visio 2016 that was released on January 2, 2018. This update has a prerequisite. Be aware that the update on the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home. (How to determine?)
Improvements and fixes
This update fixes a reliability issue that can occur when Visio runs in automation mode. To fix this issue, install this update and then follow the steps in the Registry information section.

Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

Exit all Microsoft Office applications.

Start Registry Editor:
-
In Windows 10, go to Start, enter regedit in the Search Windows box, and then select regedit.exe in the search results.

In Windows 7, click Start, type regedit in the Search programs and files text box, and then click regedit.exe in the search results.

In Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, move your mouse to the upper-right corner, click Search, type regedit in the search text box, and then click regedit.exe in the search results.
Note To start Registry Editor, you have to log on by using a user account that has administrator permissions.

Locate and then select the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Visio\Application

On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

Type DisableRibbonUpdateInInvisibleMode, and then press Enter.

In the Details pane, right-click DisableRibbonUpdateInInvisibleMode, and then click Modify.

In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

Exit Registry Editor.

To apply this update, you must have Microsoft Visio 2016 installed.

To determine whether your Office installation is Click-to-Run or MSI-based, follow these steps:

Start an Office 2016 application.

On the File menu, select Account.
-
For Office 2016 Click-to-Run installations, an Update Options item is displayed. For MSI-based installations, the Update Options item isn't displayed.
