Description of the security update for Word 2016: March 13, 2018

Summary


This security update resolves vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Office file. To learn more about these vulnerabilities, see Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2018-0919.

Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Word 2016 installed on the computer.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2013. It doesn't apply to the Office 2013 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home. (Determining your Office version)

Known issues in this security update


  • Symptoms
    After you install this security update, you may be unable to open or save a Word document.

    Workaround
    To work around this issue, install the March 6, 2018 update for Office 2016 (KB4018295)

    Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available.

Improvements and fixes


This security update contains a fix for the following nonsecurity issue:

  • When you send an email message that contains merged data resources that include upper ANSI characters as a plain text message, the upper ANSI characters are replaced by Unicode characters unexpectedly.

This security update also contains the following improvements:

  • Enables the Document Information Panel feature in Office 2016. After you install this update, you can update the SharePoint and document properties of an Office document by selecting the View tab, and clicking the Properties button to open the Properties panel.
  • Translates terms for the Document Information Panel in Office 2016.
