Description of the security update for Excel 2016: June 12, 2018

Applies to: Excel 2016

Summary

This security update resolves vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Office file. To learn more about these vulnerabilities, see Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2018-8246.

Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Microsoft Excel 2016 installed on the computer.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home (see Determining your Office version).

Improvements and fixes

This security update contains improvements and fixes for the following nonsecurity issues:
  • When you try to save an Excel workbook to an OneDrive location that has a long path in Excel 2016, the save fails without any error message.
  • You may experience crashes in Excel 2016 when you use Power Query.

  • OLAP PivotTable filter drop-down list could show unchecked check boxes for items even if the items are selected in Excel 2016.

  • After the pasteSpecial method is called in Excel 2016, the active sheet may change unexpectedly.

  • A memory leak occurs when invoking Print Preview on a worksheet that contains many ActiveX controls, and this could lead to crash in Excel 2016.

  • Column headers are not displayed sometimes if a worksheet is split or panes are frozen in Excel 2016.
