Set up Surface Headphones with Cortana

Congratulations on getting your new Surface Headphones! The first step is to pair them with your phone or PC using Bluetooth. After that, set up Cortana to get hands-free control, software updates, and personal digital assistance.

Set up your headphones on a Windows 10 PC


To see if video captioning is available in your language, select the Closed captions icon after the video starts.

When you're setting up your headphones, you'll learn the basics about using them, and you'll be able to connect the accounts you want to use for music, phone calls, calendars and email, and Skype calls. 

First pair your headphones:

  1. Press and release the power button quickly to turn on your headphonesthey'll be pairing mode the first time you turn them on.
  2. Select Start  > Settings  > Devices  > Bluetooth & other devices  > Add Bluetooth or other devices > Bluetooth .
  3. Select Surface Headphones and then select Done.

Then set up Cortana:

  1. Sign in to Cortana: select the search box on your PC, and then select Sign in . (To see if you're already signed in, select Notebook  and see if your personal account shows up.)
  2. Sign in to Cortana with your personal Microsoft account—not a work or school account.
  3. Select Devices , then select Get the app. Download the Cortana Device Setup app from the Microsoft Store. 
  4. Open Cortana, select Devices , then choose Add a new device. Follow the instructions to finish setting up your Surface Headphones with Cortana. 

 

Set up your headphones on an iOS or Android device

On an iOS device

  1. Press and release the power button quickly to turn on your headphonesthey'll be pairing mode the first time you turn them on. If you've paired your headphones with another device, press and hold the power button until you hear they're in pairing mode. When your headphones are in pairing mode, the LED light will flash white. 
  2. On your iOS device, open Settings and tap Bluetooth. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on, then tap Surface Headphones under Devices.
  3. Get the free Cortana app from the App Store. 
  4. Open the Cortana app, sign in with your Microsoft account, and then select Devices > Devices > Add a new device.
  5. Under Surface Headphones, select Set up and follow the instructions.

On an Android device

  1. Press and release the power button quickly to turn on your headphonesthey'll be pairing mode the first time you turn them on. If you've paired your headphones with another device, press and hold the power button until you hear they're in pairing mode. When your headphones are in pairing mode, the LED light will flash white. 
  2. On your Android device, go to Bluetooth settings and pair your Surface Headphones. 
  3. Get the free Cortana app from Google Play.
  4. Open the Cortana app, sign in with your Microsoft account, then select Devices > Devices > Add a new device.
  5. Under Surface Headphones, select Set up and follow the instructions.
