Description of the security update for Excel 2016: January 14, 2020

Van toepassing: Excel 2016

This security update resolves a remote code execution vulnerability that exists in Microsoft Excel software when the software does not handle objects in memory correctly. To learn more about the vulnerability, see Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2020-0650 and Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2020-0651.

Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Excel 2016 installed on the computer.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home (see What version of Office am I using?).

Improvements and fixes

This security update contains fixes for the following nonsecurity issues:

  • You scroll in a workbook by using the touchpad or touchscreen. After you finish scrolling and then select a cell, a different cell than the one that you tapped may be highlighted or selected. This issue occurs when the workbook is opened through a hyperlink or switched from Protected View to Edit mode.
  • When you open two workbooks from a network share folder, the second workbook is shown behind the first one. This issue occurs when a specific language locale keyboard, such as Chinese (Traditional, Taiwan), is enabled.
  • Fixed: Excel crash issues.
  • If a COM add-in opens a Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) window that includes a combobox drop-down control, and the user selects the combobox control, the control is immediately closed.
