Description of the security update for Excel 2016: June 9, 2020

Applies to: Excel 2016

Summary

This security update resolves a remote code execution vulnerability that exists in Microsoft Excel software if the software does not correctly handle objects in memory. To learn more about the vulnerability, see Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2020-1225 and Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2020-1226.

Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Excel 2016 installed on the computer.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home (see What version of Office am I using?).

Improvements and fixes

This security update contains fixes for the following nonsecurity issues:
  • Excel crashes when you switch between two workbooks that have different zoom level. For example, this issue occurs if the workbooks are in page layout.
  • You get an out-of-memory error message when you run CopyFromRecordset to import data into Excel. This issue occasionally occurs for certain kinds of data after CopyFromRecordset is called repeatedly.
