Computer cannot enter sleep or hibernation when you do not share media files

Applies to: Windows 7 EnterpriseWindows 7 Home BasicWindows 7 Home Premium

Consider the following scenario:
  • You enable network sharing on a computer that is running Windows 7.
  • The Allow the computer to enter Away mode is selected for the Media Sharing section in the selected power plan.
  • You do not share media on this computer, such as audio, video and pictures.
In this scenario, the computer cannot enter sleep or hibernation.

This issue occurs because the Windows Media Player network sharing service sets power state flags when media is shared. When you stop sharing media, the power state flags are not reset to allow the computer to enter sleep or hibernation.
