Description of Windows Management Framework 3.0 for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Introduction
This article describes the new management functionality in Windows Management Framework 3.0, which is available for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. 

This update enables you to use the following features on a computer that is running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1: 
  • Windows PowerShell 3.0
  • Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)
  • Windows Remote Management (WinRM)
  • Management OData IIS Extension
  • Server Manager CIM Provider

Important Before you install Windows Management Framework 3.0, review the "Prerequisites" section. Certain server applications are not yet compatible with Windows Management Framework 3.0.

To install Windows Management Framework 3.0, use the following steps:
  1. Download the correct package for your operating system and architecture:
    1. Windows 7 Service Pack 1
      For 64-bit versions: WINDOWS6.1-KB2506143-x64.msu
      For 32-bit versions: WINDOWS6.1-KB2506143-x86.msu
    2. Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
      For 64-bit versions: WINDOWS6.1-KB2506143-x64.msu
  2. Close all Windows PowerShell windows.
  3. Uninstall any other versions of Windows Management Framework 3.0.
  4. Run the .msu file that you downloaded.
To uninstall Windows Management Framework 3.0, locate and uninstall the following installed Windows Update:

Prerequisites

Important Windows Management Framework 3.0 is not currently compatible with the following applications:

To apply this hotfix, you must be running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

  • To install Windows PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE) for Windows PowerShell 3.0 on computers running Windows Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1, before installing Windows Management Framework 3.0, use Server Manager to add the optional Windows PowerShell ISE feature.

To use the update in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this update.
