Add an SMS participant to a group chat

You can add a US or Canada SMS user to a new or existing Teams for your personal life group chat. SMS users from other countries will receive an invite to join Teams and can then join the created group.  

Add SMS users to chat by:

Add SMS users to a new group

  1. Select the New Chat    New chat button  icon.

  2. Select New group chat.

  3. Take or add a photo, type a group chat name, then tap Next.

  4. In the To: line, type the SMS user's phone number to add them to the group, along with other members of the chat by phone, name or email address.
     

    Tip: The SMS user will appear in the chat with the name you assigned to them. The SMS user can later change the name using SMS commands.

  5. Send a chat message to finish creating your new group. Your invited SMS user will receive an SMS message from Microsoft that starts the group chat and contains links to join via the app or learn more about Teams.

Add SMS users to an existing group

  1. Select the chat you'd like to add the SMS user to.

  2. For mobile users, select the chat group's name, then select Add people  Add people button .

  3. Enter in your SMS participant's phone number and their name, then write an invite message so they know it's from someone they know, and add them by selecting Send

    Tip: The SMS user will appear in the chat with the name you assigned to them. The SMS user can later change the name using SMS commands.

  4. Your invited SMS user will receive an SMS message from Microsoft that starts the group chat and contains links to join via the app or learn more about Teams.

Add SMS users to a new group

  1. Select the New Chat    New chat button  icon.

  2. In the To: line, type the SMS user's phone number to add them to the group, along with other members of the chat by phone, name or email address. 
     

    Note: Select Add group name to name your newly created group.

  3. Send a chat message to finish creating your new group. Your invited SMS user will receive an SMS message from Microsoft that invites the user to download and install Teams to join the group.

Add SMS users to an existing group

  1. Select the chat you'd like to add the SMS user to.

  2. Select View and add participants  Add people to team button  near the top right corner of the window, and select Add people  Add people to team button .

  3. Enter in your SMS participant's phone number, then write an invite message so they know it's from someone they know, and add them by selecting Add.

  4. Your invited SMS user will receive an SMS message from Microsoft that invites them to the group chat and contains a link to install the app.
