Align text in a cell in Excel

If you'd like to realign text in a cell to enhance the visual presentation of your data, here's how you can do it:

  1. Select the cells that have the text you want aligned.
  2. On the Home tab choose one of the following alignment options:

  3. To vertically align text, pick Top Align Button image , Middle Align Button image , or Bottom Align Button image .
  4. To horizontally align text, pick Align Text Left 7c0246d7-b23a-4115-ad05-6be4997f24d9 , Center 9c81a42b-2a3b-4e14-b1e4-6cc2e29836bd , or Align Text Right f8b76e67-9418-4219-ac92-b3b3a761e5bc .
  5. When you have a long line of text, part of the text might not be visible. To fix this without changing the column width, select Wrap Text.
  6. To center text spanning several columns or rows, select Merge & Center.

Undo alignment changes

  • To remove an alignment change immediately after you apply it, select Undo.
  • To make alignment changes later, select the cell or cell range you want to change, and select Clear > ClearFormats.

Note

In Excel for the web, you can't rotate the angle of text in a cell.

There are additional ways to improve the way text displays like applying different fonts or adding a background color to a cell.
