This article lists some updates and frequently asked questions about changes to Microsoft cloud storage and end of support for personalized email address in Microsoft 365.

Update on changes to OneDrive photo albums

On August 31, 2023, we began to communicate an upcoming update to our cloud storage infrastructure that would result in a change in how OneDrive photos and photo albums data is counted against your overall cloud storage quota.

This change was scheduled to start rolling out on October 16, 2023. Based on the feedback we received, we have adjusted our approach, we will no longer roll out this update.

We will maintain the current photo album experience, as it is today.

Changes to cloud storage

From February 1, 2023, cloud storage used across Microsoft 365 apps and services includes attachments data and OneDrive data. All data will continue to be protected with Microsoft’s comprehensive set of security features.

This update may reduce how much cloud storage you have available to use with your OneDrive.

Important: If you exceed your Microsoft storage:

  • you won’t be able to upload, edit, or sync new files (such as Camera Roll) to your OneDrive,

  • you won't be able to send or receive email in

  • after 6 months, we may delete your OneDrive and all files within it.

  • Read What happens if you exceed your Microsoft storage quota for more information.

Your Microsoft storage quota applies to your personal Microsoft account and includes:

  • OneDrive files and photos, for example:

    • Personal files you store, upload and sync from your computer or mobile device, such as Office documents.

    • Mobile camera roll, screenshots and other files and photos which have been saved to your OneDrive.

    • Items in your Recycle Bin

  • attachments and email in-line images.

  • Microsoft Teams message attachments & recordings.

As these storage changes gradually roll out, you can check your storage usage and quotas by signing in to your Microsoft account and checking the Microsoft storage area of your account dashboard.

Tip: If you only sign in with a mobile or cell phone number, you should check your storage in OneDrive.
