Copilot in Word on mobile devices

Quickly review documents on your mobile device with Copilot in Word. Copilot can help generate summaries, suggest questions, and chat with you about the document. 

Note: This feature is changing rapidly. The actual experience you're seeing may not exactly match what you see in this article. 

Copilot in Word for iOS on iPad

Note: Copilot in Word for iOS on iPad is available to customers with a Copilot for Microsoft 365 license or Copilot Pro license.

Draft new text

  1. Open a new Word document.

  2. Tap the  Logo for Copilot in Word on mobile devices Copilot button to open the Copilot pane to open the Copilot pane.

  3. Tap either the Get started button or the  Icon for the sparkle button for Copilot in Word on mobile devices Sparkle icon.

  4. Select  Icon for the write about button in Copilot in Word for mobile devices Write about... and enter in the details of what you want Copilot to write about.

    1. Copilot places its response in the Copilot pane. Select the  Icon for the copy button for Copilot in Word on mobile devices Copy button and paste the text into your document.

Drafting new text in a Word document can also be accessed on the document's canvas.

  1. Open a new Word document.

  2. Tap the    Logo icon for Copilot in Word Copilot button on the canvas or select Draft with Copilot in the Word floating menu.

  3. In the compose box, enter in the details of what you want Copilot to write about.

  4. Select Keep it to insert the text on the canvas, Edit it to insert the text on the canvas and immediately edit it, or Regenerate to regenerate Copilot's drafted text.

Rewrite existing text

  1. Open a Word document that already has text in it.

  2. On the document, select the text you want rewritten.

  3. In the selection's context menu, tap Rewrite with Copilot.

    1. Copilot creates several rewritten versions of the text.

  4. Select < or > to navigate between rewritten versions.

  5. Select  Icon for the Replace button in Copilot in Word for mobile devices Replace to replace the original text with the rewritten text in your document. Select  Icon for the Insert button for Copilot in Word on mobile devices Insert to insert the rewritten text after your original text. Select  Icon for regenerating results for Copilot in Word Regenerate to have Copilot generate more rewritten version. Select  Icon for the adjust tone feature in Copilot in Word Adjust to adjust the tone of the rewritten versions. Tap outside of the Copilot Rewrite box to discard the rewritten versions.

Summarize a document

  1. Open a Word document that already has at least 200 words in it.

  2. Tap the  Logo for Copilot in Word on mobile devices Copilot button to open the Copilot pane.

  3. Tap either the Get started button or the  Icon for the sparkle button for Copilot in Word on mobile devices Sparkle icon.

  4. Select  Icon for summarize button in Copilot in Word for mobile devices Summarize.

    1. Copilot places its summary in the Copilot pane. Select the  Icon for the copy button for Copilot in Word on mobile devices Copy button to copy the summary.

Ask questions about a document

  1. Open a Word document that already has at least 200 words in it.

  2. Tap the  Logo for Copilot in Word on mobile devices Copilot button to open the Copilot pane.

  3. Tap either the Get started button or the  Icon for the sparkle button for Copilot in Word on mobile devices Sparkle icon.

  4. Select  Icon for the Ask a question button in Copilot in Word for mobile devices Ask a question... and ask a question of what you want to know about the document.

    1. Copilot places its answer in the Copilot pane. Select the  Icon for the copy button for Copilot in Word on mobile devices Copy button to copy Copilot's response.

Copilot in Word for iOS phones

Note: Copilot in Word for iOS iPhones is currently available to users with a Copilot for Microsoft 365 license, but not users with a Copilot Pro license.

View summary

  1. Open a Word document that has been shared with you.

  2. Tap Get a Summary from Copilot on the nudge at the bottom of the app to open the Copilot pane and generate a summary of the document.

  3. For more information about the document, choose one of Copilot's suggested questions, type a question, or tap the microphone to ask Copilot with your voice. Copilot will scan the document and give you an answer.

Chat with Copilot

  1. To chat with Copilot about the document, tap the  Copilot IconCopilot icon.

  2. Tap the microphone in the prompt box to ask Copilot a question with your voice or type your prompt into the prompt box.

  3. Tap the Send buttonSend arrow, and Copilot will generate a response.

  4. Copilot will also include references to show you where it pulled its information from in the Word file.

Ask Copilot's suggested questions

  1. To view Copilot's suggested questions and answers, tap Suggest some Q&As in the Copilot pane, or tap the  Icon for the sparkle button for Copilot in Word on mobile devices Sparkle icon in the compose box and tap the Suggest some Q&As prompt.

  2. Browse Copilot's suggested questions then tap on the down arrow to see Copilot's answers.

Copilot in Word on Android devices

Note: Copilot in Word for Android phones and tablets is currently available to users with a Copilot for Microsoft 365 license, but not users with a Copilot Pro license.

View summary

  1. Open a Word document that has been shared with you.
