ISSUE

You may get this error when you try to export to PDF in Word 2016: "Export failed due to an unexpected error."

This can occur when the Table of Contents page has a different orientation than the content.

STATUS: WORKAROUND

Our engineering team is working on a fix. In the meantime, you can try one of the following workarounds:

  • In your Word document, go to File > Print and choose the Microsoft Print to PDF option.

  • Upload your document to OneDrive, open it in Word for the web and then click on File > Save As > Download as PDF.

  • Use one of the free 3rd party PDF converters that install themselves as printers.
