The PAGE field inserts the number of the page that the Page field is located on. Word inserts the Page field when you click Page Number in the Header & Footer group on the Insert tab and then choose a page number format from a gallery.

The content and steps in this article apply to Word for Microsoft 365 and other desktop versions of Word for Windows and Mac. The PAGE field does not count beyond 32,767.
Syntax
When you view the PAGE field in your document, the syntax looks appears as:
{ PAGE [\* Format Switch ] }
Note
A field code determines what a field displays. A field result is the content displayed in the document after the field code is evaluated. To switch between viewing field codes and field results, press Alt+F9.
Switches
\* Format Switch
Optional switch that overrides the numeral style selected in the Number format box in the Page Number Format dialog box (Insert > Page Number > Format Page Numbers).
Note
To change the character formatting of the page number, modify the Page Number character style.
