Microsoft previously offered a limited-time free desktop editing preview of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in select markets. This preview is ending. After the preview ends, the free desktop apps will continue to let you open, view, and print supported files. To create, edit, and save files, you can use the free Microsoft 365 web apps with a Microsoft account, or purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription for full desktop editing features.

What’s changing?
If you were using the free desktop editing preview, you’ll see a notice in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint letting you know the preview is ending. After your account moves to the standard free desktop experience:

FAQ
Will my files be deleted?
No. Your files won’t be deleted. Files saved on your device or on OneDrive remain available. Files saved to OneDrive can be accessed in your browser or Microsoft 365 for the web. For more info, see Upload and save files and folders to OneDrive.
What happens if I don’t do anything?
You’ll move to the standard free desktop experience. You can still open, view, and print files in the desktop apps. To edit, use Microsoft 365 for the web or purchase Microsoft 365.
Can I still edit a file for free?
Yes. You can edit for free using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for the web with a Microsoft account. Go to Microsoft365.com and log in with your Microsoft account. Once logged in, select the Apps and more launcher
at the top of the left navigation pane and choose an app.
