This FAQ includes frequently asked questions for agents in SharePoint, for SharePoint rich text editor, and for both.
For agents
Can agents in SharePoint help with workflows and content discovery?
Yes. Agents in SharePoint support workflows, projects, content discovery, and knowledge sharing by using content from SharePoint sites, pages, and selected files. If you have edit permissions to the site, you can create custom agents for a specific purpose.
Can I use agents created in SharePoint outside SharePoint?
Yes. You can access an agent from a SharePoint site, page, list, or document library. You can also use it in Teams and Microsoft Copilot.
Can I create and use agents on SharePoint Online classic sites?
No. The experience for creating and using agents is available on SharePoint Online modern sites. However, when you create an agent from a modern site, you can select any SharePoint site as a knowledge source.
Can I use agents without a Microsoft Copilot license?
Yes. You can use agents in SharePoint if your organization has set up pay-as-you-go billing. Otherwise, you need a Microsoft Copilot license.
Can I include more than 20 source items in an agent?
No. You can include up to 20 source items in an agent. Source items can be sites, document libraries, folders, lists, and files. If you need content from more than 20 items, select a higher-level container that includes the content. For example, you can include any of the following combinations:
- 20 files
- 20 sites
- 20 folders
- 10 files + 10 sites
- 4 folders + 16 files
Can an agent give me information from content that I can't access?
No. An agent can use sites, pages, lists, and documents that are included in its sources and that you have permission to access. It can also use Microsoft Graph data about recent file interactions and profile information. If you don't have permission to specific content, the agent doesn't show information from that content in your chat.
Do agents support every file type?
No. Agents currently support these file types:
- Office documents: DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, XLSX
- New Microsoft 365 formats: FLUID, LOOP
- Universal formats: PDF, TXT, RTF
- Web files: ASPX, HTM, HTML
- OpenDocument formats: ODT, ODP
Support for the following file formats is coming soon:
- Images
- Meeting recordings and other videos
- OneNote notebooks
Note
You can't add pages from the Site Pages library as a source for an agent.
Do agent capabilities vary by SharePoint role?

| Role | Interact with agents | Create a new agent | Share an agent | Edit an agent | Set an agent as default | Delete an agent |

Does selecting a hub site as a knowledge source include its associated sites?
Yes. Starting September 2025, when you select a hub site as a knowledge source for a custom agent, its associated sites are automatically included. For a custom agent created before September 2025, edit the agent, remove the hub site, and then select it again. Save the agent to include the associated sites.
Are agents in SharePoint the same as agents created in Microsoft Copilot Studio?
No. Agents in SharePoint allow site editors to define an agent for a team or project directly in SharePoint. Copilot Studio supports SharePoint, OneDrive, and other sources. You can publish a Copilot Studio agent to a SharePoint channel-specific site. Publishing creates a .agent file that you can add to the site through the Agent link web part or set as the main agent for the site.
Can I share an agent in SharePoint?
Yes. Select the ellipsis for the agent, copy its link, and share the link with others. For detailed steps, see Share an agent from SharePoint in Teams.
Can I delete an agent in SharePoint?
Yes. If you have edit permissions, find the .agent file, select the ellipsis, and then select Delete.
Can other people see my agent chat history?
No. Only you can see your agent chat history.
Can I delete my agent chat history in SharePoint?
Yes. From the chat pane, you can delete a specific conversation or all chat history.
In addition, you can delete all your Copilot interaction history. Go to myaccount.microsoft.com, and then select Settings & Privacy > Privacy > Copilot activity history. Select the button to clear your history. For details, see Delete your Microsoft Copilot activity history. When you delete agents in SharePoint, you also remove Copilot data in other Microsoft 365 applications.
Can I send feedback about agents?
Yes. While creating an agent, select Give Feedback. While interacting with an agent, select thumbs up or thumbs down for an individual response. Both options let you submit text feedback.
For SharePoint rich text editor
Can I use the rich text editor to author SharePoint pages and posts?
Yes. The SharePoint rich text editor helps you author content in SharePoint pages and posts. Copilot in the rich text editor can help you rewrite text, change the tone, condense text, and elaborate on text. The rich text editor is part of the Text web part and is available to users with a Microsoft Copilot license.
Can my organization enable Copilot in the rich text editor?
Yes. For licensing and setup information, see Enable users for Microsoft Copilot.
Does the rich text editor have access to my documents or Microsoft Graph data like emails, chats, and calendars?
No. SharePoint's rich text editor doesn't have access to your documents or Microsoft Graph data, such as emails, chats, and calendars. When you rewrite with Copilot, only the text in the editor is considered.
Does the rich text editor save history?
No. The rich text editor doesn't save your previously edited text.
Can I chat with the rich text editor?
No. You can chat with Copilot by selecting the Copilot button in the upper-right corner of a SharePoint site, page, or document library.
Does Copilot in the rich text editor have a word processing limit?
Yes. The SharePoint rich text editor has a high word limit of around 30,000 words in English, but Copilot currently has a lower processing limit. Keep the total word count in each rich text editor under 3,000 words. For more information, see Keep it short and sweet: a guide on the length of documents that you provide to Copilot.
Can I send feedback about Copilot in the rich text editor?
Yes. In the rewrite text pane, select the thumbs up or thumbs down icon at the bottom of the pane.
For both agents in SharePoint and the rich text editor
Do agents in SharePoint and the rich text editor support multiple languages?
Yes. Copilot supports a growing set of languages. Quality is highest in English and continues to improve in other languages.
Do Microsoft security, privacy, and governance controls apply to these experiences?
Yes. Copilot and Microsoft 365 are built on Microsoft's approach to responsible AI, security, compliance, and privacy.
AI-generated content might be incomplete, inaccurate, or outdated. Review and validate output before taking action. Don't rely on agents in SharePoint for medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice or for decisions in regulated or high-stakes environments. Microsoft doesn't use customer data that you provide to or that Copilot processes to train its generative AI foundation models.
