Get started with OneDrive agents

Agents in OneDrive help you stay on top of your work by letting you group related files and folders together, then ask questions, get summaries, and see what's changed-all without opening each file. Saved directly in your OneDrive, these AI-powered agents make it easy to catch up on projects, surface key details quickly, and share updates with your team, so everyone stays aligned and informed in one place.

Note: AI agents are available with Microsoft 365 Copilot for work or school accounts only.

What is an AI agent?

An AI agent is a smart assistant you can create in OneDrive to help you understand and work with your files. You pick the files or folders, and the agent uses Microsoft Copilot to help you:

  • Summarize updates and changes

  • Answer questions about your documents

  • Quickly find important details across multiple files

Agents are saved as .agent files and live in your OneDrive, so you can use them anytime you need a refresher or quick insight.

What can you do with Agents in OneDrive:

  • Create an agent from your OneDrive files or folders with Create an agent option.

  • Access your agent as a file in OneDrive (.agent extension).

  • Open the agent to ask questions and get answers from your documents using AI.

  • Edit or update your agent anytime to change its sources, name, or instructions.

  • Share your agent with your team to collaborate and keep everyone informed.

When to use an AI agent

Here are some helpful ways to use an agent in OneDrive:

  • Project work: Keep track of shared files and get quick status updates.

  • Onboarding: Learn about a new team or process by reviewing existing documents.

  • Meeting prep: Get caught up on files discussed in past meetings.

  • Research: Ask questions across multiple articles, spreadsheets, and slides.

What you need to get started

  • A Microsoft 365 Copilot license for work or school account

  • Files already saved in OneDrive or SharePoint

  • Agent creation or consumption of personal OneDrive content is not available for users on consumption billing (e.g. pay-as-you-go).

How to find and use an AI agent

Once your organization enables agents, you’ll see the option to create one from your OneDrive file list. After creating it:

  • Your agent appears as a file in OneDrive with a .agent extension, with the icon  Copilot

  • Open the file to use the agent in a full-screen viewer

  • Ask questions and get answers from the documents you included

Good to know

  • Agents only work with the files you give them access to.

  • If someone shares an agent with you, you’ll only see full responses if you also have access to the files inside.

  • You can edit or update your agent anytime.
