Delete a message in chat

If the settings for a chat you’re in allow you to delete messages, here’s how:

  1. Open the chat in GroupMe.

  2. Long press (mobile) or right-click (desktop) the message you want to delete.

  3. Select Delete.

  4. Confirm the deletion.

Once deleted, a confirmation will appear in the chat that the message was removed.

Tip: Don’t see a delete option? That could mean the current settings don’t allow you to delete messages in that chat. Read on to learn more about how it works.

Delete Message Mode

Delete Message Mode lets group owners and admins choose who can delete messages in a group. The setting helps keep conversations appropriate, clear, and consistent with the group’s goals.

If you're a group owner or admin, check or change this setting by selecting Settings > Permissions  > Delete Message Mode in your group.

The three Delete Message Mode options are:

  • Admins and Authors: Authors can delete their own messages—useful for fixing typos or clarifying information. Admins can delete any message.

  • Admins Only: Only admins can delete messages. Best for keeping the group safe and focused by removing inappropriate or off-topic content.

  • Nobody: No one can delete messages, not even admins. This is ideal for groups where message permanence is important.
