How do I register my phone number on GroupMe?
Applies To
GroupMe

To start using GroupMe, you’ll need to register your phone number. This process ensures that you have a valid number linked to your account. After entering your email and password, you can complete the registration process by verifying your number via SMS.

  1. Enter your phone number without adding any leading zeros.

  2. Choose your country from the dropdown list to automatically apply the correct country code.

Note: If you receive a message stating "phone number not verified" when entering your number, it means that GroupMe is unable to register your number. This could be because the number belongs to a country that is not supported by GroupMe, or it is a type of number (such as VoIP or toll-free) that is not eligible for registration.

  3. Tap Next to receive a 6-digit verification code via SMS.

  4. When you receive the code, type it in to confirm your number. If you don't receive a code, see "Troubleshooting registration issues" below.

Registration Requirements

Before you register your phone number, make sure you meet the following criteria:

  • The phone number you’re registering must belong to you.

  • Your device should be able to receive SMS messages.

  • You must have the latest version of GroupMe installed on your phone.

  • Any call-blocking settings or apps that could interfere with SMS delivery should be disabled.

  • You need an active internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data). If you’re experiencing connectivity issues, test your internet by opening a web page.

  • Jailbroken devices may experience issues during registration.

  • Each GroupMe account requires a unique phone number. You can't use the same number for multiple accounts.

Unsupported phone numbers that cannot be used to register on GroupMe include:

  • Most VoIP numbers

  • Landlines

  • Toll-free numbers

  • Premium-rate numbers

  • Universal access numbers (UAN)

Troubleshooting registration issues

GroupMe will send you a one-time verification code via SMS to confirm ownership of your phone number. If you don’t receive your verification code via SMS:

  • Wait and retry sending after a minute or two.

  • Avoid guessing the code, as too many incorrect attempts may temporarily lock you out.

  • Check your internet connection and confirm that your device can receive international SMS messages.
