When you’re in a Teams call or meeting, Teams uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) software to detect certain qualities of your audio or video feed and deliver high quality experiences.

Improving the quality of your audio

When you speak in a meeting, Teams uses AI algorithms to enhance speech quality, eliminate background noise and transcribe your meetings.

More specifically, we use AI for the following tasks:

  • cancel echo

  • suppress background noise

  • enhance distorted speech

  • reduce reverberation

  • detect music

  • create meeting transcription if activated by the user

  • create live captions and translated live captions if activated by the user

Improving the quality of your video

When you turn on your camera in a meeting, Teams uses AI to enhance the quality of your video when you use the following features:

  • backgrounds

  • adjust brightness

  • frame cropping

  • soft focus

Screen content processing

Teams AI detects whether your screen content is static or in motion to deliver higher quality experiences. In low-bandwidth scenarios, Teams may prioritize picture quality if your content is motionless, such as in a PowerPoint presentation, to improve readability. If you’re sharing a video or other moving content, Teams might optimize for a higher frame rate to make your content appear smoother.

How data is processed

Your audio and video data never leave the call - they’re processed locally in Teams using AI and machine learning software.

Data privacy

Your meeting’s audio and video data never leave Teams and aren’t stored anywhere, by anyone – not even Microsoft. Microsoft only uses data that is publicly available, crowdsourced, or from employees to develop its AI processing.
