In Microsoft Teams (free), you can use the command box to search for people, chats, and more.

Search by phone number or email address

  1. Open Microsoft Teams (free).

    Tips: 

    • From the mini Teams window in Windows 11, select the button The open Teams button in Mini Teams. to open Microsoft Teams (free).

    • From Chat in Windows 11, select the Open Teams button  Teams open Teams in Windows 11.

  2. Enter the phone number or email address into the command box.

  3. If the phone number or email address matches someone already using Microsoft Teams (free), they will appear in the search results, and you can select them to start or continue a one-to-one chat with that person.

Search for people already using Microsoft Teams (free)

  1. Open Microsoft Teams (free).

    Tips: 

    • From the mini Teams window in Windows 11, select the button The open Teams button in Mini Teams. to open Microsoft Teams (free).

    • From Chat in Windows 11, select the Open Teams button  Teams open Teams in Windows 11.

  2. Start typing the person's name in the command box.

  3. As you type, Microsoft Teams (free) will suggest results, and you can select the one you want to start or continue a one-to-one chat with that person.

    Note: Only people in your address book in Microsoft Teams (free) will be displayed.

Search for chat conversations

  1. Open Microsoft Teams (free).

    Tips: 

    • From the mini Teams window in Windows 11, select the button The open Teams button in Mini Teams. to open Microsoft Teams (free).

    • From Chat in Windows 11, select the Open Teams button  Teams open Teams in Windows 11.

  2. Start typing the names of people in the conversations into the command box. You can type as many names as you want, and the results will filter to include only group chats with all those names.

  3. When the chat you want displays, select it to go to that chat.
