How to use search in Teams

In Teams for your personal life, you can use the command box to search for people, chats, and more.

Search by phone number or email address

  1. Enter the phone number or email address into the command box.

  2. If the phone number or email address matches someone already using Teams, they will appear in the search results, and you can click to start or continue a one-to-one chat with that person.

    • If the phone number or email address does not match someone already on Teams, you can invite that person to use teams.

Tip: Inviting friends and family to Teams via phone number or email address is currently available in Teams for Windows, Web, and Mac.

Search for people already using Teams

  1. Start typing the person's name in the command box.

  2. As you type, Teams will suggest results, and you can click the one you want to start or continue a one-to-one chat with that person.

Note: Only people in your address book in Teams will be displayed.

Search for chat conversations

  1. Start typing the names of people in the conversations into the command box. You can type as many names as you want, and the results will filter to include only group chats with all those names.

  2. When you see the chat you want, click it to go to that chat.
