To insert High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF), AV1 Image File Format (AVIF), or WebP files into Microsoft 365 you need to make sure you have the latest CODEC that supports it. You can get that CODEC from the Microsoft Store.
Note:Â Images that are stored in HEIF files that have the .HEIC file extension are compressed using the High Efficient Video Coding (HEVC) format.
Get the CODEC
-
Go to the Microsoft Store app in Windows 10 or in your browser at https://store.microsoft.com.
-
Use the Search box to look for HEVC, WebP, or AV1 depending upon which format you need.
-
From the results select HEVC Video Extensions (paid) and HEIF Image Extensions (free) for HEIF, AV1 Video Extension (free) for AVIF, or Webp Image Extensions (free) for WebP.
-
Select Get and install it.
Restart Microsoft 365 and you should now be able to insert HEIF, WebP, or AVIF files in your files.
Note: Some DLSR cameras generate HEIC images that aren't compatible with the HEVC CODEC pack. If you encounter this error try converting your existing HEIC images to JPEG, and adjust the settings on your camera to use a different format, if possible.
