Python in Excel is currently in preview and is subject to change based on feedback. To use this feature, join the Microsoft 365 Insider Program and choose the Beta Channel Insider level.  

Python in Excel is available to Excel for Windows customers using the Beta Channel. At this time, the feature is not available on other platforms. 

If you encounter any issues with Python in Excel, please report them by selecting Help > Feedback in Excel.

Platform availability  

Python in Excel is only available on Excel for Windows if you're using the Beta Channel. Access the Beta Channel by joining the Microsoft 365 Insider Program and choosing the Beta Channel Insider level. 

The feature is not available on the following platforms. 

  • Excel for Mac

  • Excel on the web

  • Excel for iPad

  • Excel for iPhone

  • Excel for Android

On unsupported platforms, workbooks containing Python can be viewed but Python cells display an error when recalculated. 

Note: Python in Excel requires Microsoft Edge WebView2

What’s included in your Microsoft 365 subscription?  

While Python in Excel is in preview, all Excel for Windows customers using the Beta Channel can recalculate Python formulas. To add or edit Python formulas, you must opt into the Python in Excel preview. Shared workbook recipients can recalculate Python formulas that already exist in the workbook but can’t add or edit Python formulas until they opt into the preview. 

Important: While in preview, Python in Excel is included in your Microsoft 365 subscription. After the preview, some functionality will require a paid license. More details will be available before general availability. 

Microsoft 365 license requirements 

The Python in Excel preview is available with a paid Microsoft 365 consumer, commercial, or education license that provides access to the Microsoft 365 desktop apps, such the Office 365 E3 and E5 licenses.  

Important:  Microsoft 365 connected experiences must be enabled to use the Python in Excel preview.
