Make sure the microphone is connected, selected, and working in Windows. Exit any other programs that might be using the Microphone. For additional Windows info, see Fix microphone problems.Â

Press the
 Windows key, type Sound and press Enter. -
Under Input, select the microphone you want to test.

Under General > Audio, make sure Allow apps and Windows to use this device for audio is enabled. If it says Don't allow, then it's enabled.Â

Under Test your microphone, select Start test and begin speaking.Â
If the bar moves while you speak, your microphone is working properly.
In step 4, if you don't see the bar moving, try the following:

Adjust the Input volume.

If the mic has an on/off switch, make sure it's on.

Switch to a different input jack or microphone.

For a device connected via Bluetooth, check that the device connection says Connected voice music. Open Bluetooth & devices settings.
If Start Dictation is grayed out on the Edit menu try this:Â Â

Go toÂ
 and select System Settings. Select full screen  for the dialog. -
Scroll to Privacy & Security, select Microphone and turn on Microsoft PowerPoint
. -
Scroll again, select Keyboard and under Dictation, turn it onÂ

Under Microphone source, select another mic if preferred

Under Shortcut, select or customize a keyboard shortcut.
