When you enter a formula in an empty Microsoft Excel table column, Excel automatically fills the formula down to create a calculated column. The formula adjusts for each row and extends to any new rows that you add to the table. You don't need to use the Fill or Copy command.
Create a calculated column
Select a cell in the empty table column that you want to use as the calculated column.
Tip
To add a table column, enter a header in the first cell immediately to the right of the table.
Enter the formula that you want to use, and then press Enter.
Note
If other cells in the column already contain data, Excel doesn't create a calculated column.
In the following example, the SUM formula in cell D2 can automatically fills all cells in calculated column D.
Edit a calculated column
To update a calculated column, select any cell in the column, edit the formula, and then press Enter. Excel automatically applies the updated formula to the remaining cells in the table column.
Delete a calculated column
Select the column header, and then use one of the following methods:
- On the Home tab, select Cells > Delete > Delete Columns.
- Right-click the column header, and then select Delete Columns.
