Notes:

To help provide additional transparency about what content has been generated or altered by using AI in Microsoft 365, watermarks can be added to images, videos, or audio content. You control whether watermarks are added to images, and the IT admin for your organization controls adding watermarks to video and audio content. You're always responsible for following the Microsoft Enterprise AI Services Code of Conduct, including not generating or sharing deceptive AI content.

Note: The placement and the wording of watermarks can’t be customized.

Even if watermarks aren’t used, additional information is added to the metadata of images, video, and audio content that you generate or alter by using AI in Microsoft 365.

Watermarks for images

You can turn on watermarks for images that you generate or alter by using AI in Microsoft 365. For example, when you use Microsoft Designer or the image generation capabilities in Word or PowerPoint.

Here’s an example of a watermark in the bottom right corner of an image:

AI-generated image of an empty conference with a window view of a city skyline. In the bottom right corner is a watermark that is the Copilot icon.

In some cases, the watermark might appear in another location on the image or the watermark might appear as text that says “AI-Generated.”

To turn on watermarks for images, do the following:

  1. Sign in to https://myaccount.microsoft.com with your work or school account.

  2. Go to Settings & Privacy > Privacy > Data options.

  3. Under Include a watermark when images from Microsoft 365 are AI-generated, turn on the Show watermark toggle.

After you turn on image watermarks, a watermark will be added to any new image that you generate by using AI in Microsoft 365 or any existing image that you alter.

This setting applies to all devices where you’re signed in with the same work or school account.

Watermarks for video and audio content

The IT admin for your organization controls whether watermarks are added to video and audio content that you generate or alter by using AI in Microsoft 365. If the IT admin for your organization turns them on, watermarks will be added to your video and audio content that is AI-generated.

Here are two examples:

  • A visual watermark is added to a video that you generate with Clipchamp.

  • An audio watermark is added to an audio overview that you generate with Copilot from a Word document.

Notes:

  • Watermarks are currently available only for audio content.

  • We anticipate that watermarks will be available for video content by the end of April 2026.

For audio content, the watermark will verbally state “This audio is generated by AI.” The watermark will be heard at either the beginning or at the end of the audio content.

Additional information added to the metadata of content that’s generated or altered by AI in Microsoft 365

Even if watermarks aren’t turned on by you or your IT admin, some information disclosing the use of AI is added to the metadata of images, videos, and audio content that you generate or alter by using AI in Microsoft 365.

For example, the additional information added to the metadata of the content might include which AI model was used, which app generated the content, or when the content was generated. For more information, see the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) website.
