Configure it in the browser toolbar

  1. On your browser's toolbar, go to Extensions, and then choose Show in toolbar (Edge) or Pin (Chrome).

  2. Now, with the Editor icon displayed on the toolbar, select it to adjust settings, pick the languages you want Editor to check, and select among grammar, spelling, and refinements. ​​​​​​​ Microsoft Editor extension showing drop-down from browser with settings for switching options on and off

Sign in to Editor

When you install the extension, you'll be prompted to sign in. To get grammar suggestions and a personalized spelling dictionary, sign in using your Microsoft account (such as outlook.com, live.com, or hotmail.com), or create a new one.

If you don't sign in immediately after installing the extension, you can return to the sign-in page by clicking on the dimmed Editor icon in the toolbar.

Select your languages

Check spelling and grammar for up to three languages at the same time. The languages that Editor checks are based on the first three languages configured for your browser. You can go with this default or specify up to three languages in Editor settings.

Click or tap the underlined word to see Editor's suggested revisions.

Fine tune your settings

Writing a resume? Or something casual, where you don't want Editor's suggestions for formality? You can switch different kinds of suggestions on and off in Editor settings. Settings is also where you go to manage languages, as well as websites where you don't want to run Editor.

To get to Settings, select the Editor on your browser toolbar, and then select the gear icon.

Not-to-be-missed features

As you become familiar with Editor, be sure to take advantage of all the features, including these:

  • AutoCorrect Editor will automatically correct misspelled words as you type. A green highlight will show you that a word has been autocorrected.

  • Add to Dictionary Add custom words (like names you frequently use or acronyms) to create your personal dictionary. Look for Add to dictionary when Editor makes a spelling suggestion.

  • Synonyms Double click on a word to get the top five synonyms.

  • Switch off unwanted suggestions To turn off a grammar or refinements option that you don't want suggestions for, look for Stop checking for this when Editor makes a grammar or refinements suggestion.

Writing assistance wherever you write

As a browser extension, Editor brings out your best writing on web platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and LinkedIn. Editor also helps you write with confidence in email and documents, as part of a Microsoft 365​​​​​​​ subscription in these apps:
