Manage vocabulary

Add words to your personal vocabulary

You can customize speech recognition by adding new words such as names, medical terms, or organization-specific phrases to your personal vocabulary. Follow the steps below to add, train, and manage words.

Open the Manage Vocabulary window

  1. In either the Explorer screen or Report Editor, select the Speech Menu (gear icon) on the left pane.
  2. Select Manage Vocabulary.

If this is your first time using the feature, the list will be empty and a message will indicate that you have no words in your personal vocabulary.

Add a new word

  1. Select Add to open the Add Word dialog box.
  2. In Enter the word you want to add, type the word you want to include in your vocabulary.
  3. Choose one of the following options:

Option 1: Use the default pronunciation

  • Select Use Default Pronunciation if the word is spelled phonetically and likely to be recognized correctly.
  • If the word already exists in the system vocabulary, a message will appear explaining your available options.

Option 2: Train the word using your voice

  1. Select the microphone icon.
  2. Dictate the word clearly to provide your preferred pronunciation.
  3. Select Confirm to save the trained pronunciation.

Option 3: Enter a phonetic pronunciation

Use this option for words that require a specific or non-standard pronunciation (for example, uncommon last names).

  1. Select Enter the word as you would pronounce it.
  2. In Pronunciation, type a phonetic spelling of the word, using spaces between syllables (for example, kay lee own ee).
  3. Select Save.

A confirmation message will appear at the top of the dialog box indicating that the word was successfully trained.

Return to your vocabulary list

After saving, a success message appears confirming that the word has been added or trained. Select Back to return to your vocabulary list.

Note

If the spoken pronunciation of a word differs from its phonetic spelling, you may be prompted to enter the word as you would pronounce it. When providing a phonetic spelling, use spaces only to separate syllables; punctuation such as dashes or special characters is not supported.
