Import a text file by opening it in Excel. You can open a text file that you created in another program as an Excel workbook by using the Open command. Opening a text file in Excel does not change the format of the file — you can see this in the Excel title bar, where the name of the file retains the text file name extension (for example, .txt or .csv).

Important: The Assistant will, in most cases, modify the registry and move files from startup folders used by Excel. Before you run the Assistant, make sure that you back up the registry and all files in startup folders used by Excel so that you can restore the registry and backed-up files if a problem occurs.

Select a column with this problem. If you don't want to convert the whole column, you can select one or more cells instead. Just be sure the cells you select are in the same column, otherwise this process won't work. (See Use Paste Special and Multiply below if you have this problem in more than one column.)
