Exchange Server fails to export eDiscovery search results to a discovery mailbox

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • An administrator initiates an eDiscovery search.
  • The search is complete, and the results can be previewed without any issue.
  • When the results are exported to a target eDiscovery mailbox, the process fails and returns the following error message:

  • An unknown error occurred on the search server. Please contact your administrator for assistance.
  • 'Export failed with error type: 'Unauthorized'. Details: The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized.'.
