  • You have a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, or Windows Embedded 8 Standard.
  • The network connection is disconnected and connected repeatedly. Therefore, the network icon in the notification area is changed repeatedly.

In this scenario, the desktop is not shown correctly. Additionally, you notice the GDI objects in the Explorer.exe process increase significantly by using Task Manager.

How to obtain this update or hotfix

To resolve this issue, we have released an update rollup for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2. We also have released a hotfix and an update rollup for Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Embedded 8 Standard.

The update rollup fixes many other issues in addition to the issue that the hotfix fixes. We recommend that you use the update rollup. The update rollup is larger than the hotfix. Therefore, the update rollup takes longer to download.
