Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
- You have a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
- You set the SrvsvcDefaultShareInfo registry entry under the following registry subkey to configure the default share permissions for a network share:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\services\lanmanserver\DefaultSecurity\ - You restart the computer.
In this scenario, you cannot access an administrative share on the computer.
For example, when a user tries to access drive C by using the "\\<computer name>\C$" command, the user receives the following error message:

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problem, click Diagnose.

Hotfix information

After you install this hotfix, you must make changes to the registry to set the value of the Level2Compatibility registry entry to 1. To have us set the value of the Level2Compatibility registry entry for you, go to the "Fix it for me" section. If you prefer to make this change yourself, go to the "Let me fix it myself" section.

After you install this hotfix, you must make the following changes to the registry to set the value of the Level2Compatibility registry entry to 1:
Click Start, type regedit in the Start search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
Type Level2Compatibility, and then press ENTER.
Right-click Level2Compatibility, and then click Modify.
In the Edit DWORD (32-bit) Value box, type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
