Symptoms
When you try to add a printer in a Citrix Virtual Apps session hosted on Windows Server 2019, you might receive the following permissions-related error message:
- Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.
This issue occurs when using the modern Windows Settings experience to add a printer (Settings > Printers & scanners > Add printer > The printer that I want isn’t listed).
Cause
There is a limitation with the modern Windows Settings experience in Windows Server 2019 when used with Citrix Virtual Apps. This issue is fixed in Windows Server 2022 and later versions.
Resolution
Method 1: Upgrade to Windows Server 2022 or a later version. This issue affects only Windows Server 2019.
Method 2: Add the printer from Control Panel.
Open Control Panel.
Select View devices and printers.
On the toolbar, select Add a printer.
In the “Add a device” window, select The printer that I want isn't listed.
Complete the Add Printer wizard.
