Microsoft is returning Application Virtualization (App-V) server to extended support (as part of the Fixed Lifecycle policy) for an additional three years, through October 9, 2029. While the App-V client is a built-in component of Windows 11 and remains in support, App-V server had originally reached end of support in April 2026.
This extension gives organizations additional time to continue operating their existing App-V server deployments while evaluating a longer-term application delivery strategy. Microsoft recommends adoption of Azure Virtual Desktop App Attach and migration to the modern Windows app packaging format, MSIX.
Here is a feature-based comparison of App-V and MSIX packages:
| Feature | App-V | MSIX |
|---|---|---|
| Sharing across apps | A connection group feature in App-V groups packages together to create a virtual environment. This feature allows applications within that package group to interact with each other. | Shared package containers in MSIX allow you to create a shared runtime container for packaged applications. This feature enables sharing a merged view of the virtual file system and virtual registry, thus providing access to one another's package root files and state. |
| How updates take place | App-V divides the app into 64-KB blocks. However, you need to download the complete app to get updates. | Only the delta (differential) updates are downloaded. |
| A single copy of a file across apps/users | File duplication across apps can happen. | Keeps a single copy of any file. |
| Signing | Not required | Required |
We recognize that application delivery environments can be complex, particularly for organizations with large application estates, specialized requirements, or constrained migration timelines. The extended support period is intended to provide continuity and more time for planning and migration.
Continue working with your Microsoft account team and technology partners to assess your environment, plan for the future, and determine the right application delivery approach for your organization.
