This article lists common error messages that you may receive when you change or rename a SharePoint site address (URL). Based on the information in each message, you can determine why the site cannot be renamed and how to fix the error.

| This site address is unavailable. | Choose a different name. |
| This site is locked. | Unlock the site and retry the rename. |
| This site is write locked. | Unlock the site and retry the rename. |
| This site is read-only. | Mark the site to read-write and retry the rename. |
| This site template is not supported for rename. | This site can't be renamed. |
| This is a Hub Site. | This site can't be renamed. |
| This is a top-level site. | This site can't be renamed. |
| The root site '<https://contoso.sharepoint.com>' for this tenant does not exist. | Restore the root site or create a new one. |
| This site's URL cannot be changed because it contains sites that are included in an eDiscovery hold or retention policy | This site can't be changed. |
| The target site URL is not a valid URL. | Use a valid target URL. |
| The target URL contains invalid characters or exceeds maximum length 128. | Don't contain unsupported characters and exceed maximum length 128 in the target URL. |
| The target site url shouldn't be empty. | Use a valid target site URL. |
| The Office 365 group does not exist. | Make sure the Office 365 group exists. |
| The Office 365 group is still being created. | Wait for the group to be created. |
| An address change is already in progress. | Wait for few minutes and the change should be done. |
| The new site name is too long. | The path for all files and folders in the site can't exceed 400 characters. |
| CurrentSiteUrl '<https://contoso.sharepoint.com/sites/currentsite>' has different ManagedPath with NewSiteUrl '<https://contoso.sharepoint.com/teams/newsite>'. | Only relative path rename is supported. |
| Information Rights Management (IRM) is applied to this site. | To change the site address, disable IRM for the site. |
| The site contains a SharePoint 2013 workflow. | The workflow might need to be republished after you change the site address. |
| An app is installed on the site. | The app might need to be recreated and reinstalled after you change the site address. |
