"The last backup did not complete successfully" error message when you back up a Windows 8 system

Symptoms

When you try to back up a Windows 8 system, you receive the following error message:

Check your backup

The last backup did not complete successfully

If you click More information in the message window, the following message is displayed:

The backup failed

There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location. Make sure that, for all volumes to be backup up, the minimum required disk space for shadow copy creation is available. This applies to both the backup storage destination and volumes included in the backup. Minimum requirement: For volumes less than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 50 megabytes of free space. For volumes more than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 320 megabytes of free space. Recommended: At least 1 gigabyte of free disk space on each volume if volume size is more than 1 gigabyte. Resolution

An update is avaialble to resolve the problem. Download the following package according to your operating system:

Update for Windows 8

Update for Windows 8 for x64-based versions

Update for Windows Server 2012

Prerequisites

To apply this update, you must be running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.

Registry information

To apply this update, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this update.

The dates and the times for these files on your local computer are displayed in your local time together with your current daylight saving time (DST) bias. Workaround

To work around this problem, increase the size of the OEM partition on the backup drive.
