Symptoms

A physical to virtual (P2V) conversion in System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 (SCVMM) fails during 'Scan System' with error 2910. Job details show three separate errors under the Summary tab. Following this error, the Microsoft System Virtual Machine Manager P2V Agent is not successfully uninstalled. Manual uninstallation of the P2V Agent from the source system will also fail.

Scan System error:

VMM does not have appropriate permissions to access the resource on the source.contoso.com server. Ensure that Virtual Machine Manager has the appropriate rights to perform this action.

ID: 2910
Details: Access is denied (0x80070005)
Job Summary errors:

Error (2910)
VMM does not have appropriate permissions to access the resource on the source.contoso.com server. (Access is denied (0x80070005))

Recommended Action
Ensure that Virtual Machine Manager has the appropriate rights to perform this action.

Warning (458)
The Virtual Machine Manager agent could not be removed from source.contoso.com.

Recommended Action
Uninstall the Virtual Machine Manager agent using Add or Remove Programs on source.contoso.com.

Warning (3142)
Failed to fully clean up source.contoso.com.

Recommended Action
Ensure that the correct boot loader is installed and remove all files named "$scvmm." from the root directory of the boot volume on source.contoso.com, and then try the operation again.

Cause

This can occur if the P2V Agent is unable to properly enumerate the Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) cache that is presented to Windows as a local drive; usually drive Q. This drive is visible in Windows Explorer but cannot be opened. This same enumeration issue prevents the SCVMM P2V Agent from being uninstalled.

Resolution

In order to remove the existing P2V Agent and perform a successful P2V of the Source machine simply uninstall the Application Virtualization Desktop Client. A restart is required. Once the drive no longer appears in Windows Explorer the P2V Agent can be manually removed and a new P2V operation performed.

Once the P2V is complete you can reinstall the App-V client.

More Information

When the P2V Agent is manually uninstalled from the Source machine the error below will appear. This is another symptom to identify this issue.

Failed to fully clean up the system. Ensure that the correct boot loader is installed and remove all files named "$scvmm*.*" from the root directory of the boot volume, and then try the operation again. An issue with many of the same error messages is described in the article below.
