Important

  • You need to be part of the Frontier program to get early access to new Microsoft 365 Copilot default experience in Outlook. Frontier connects you directly with Microsoft’s latest AI innovations. Frontier previews are subject to the existing preview terms of your customer agreements. As these features are still in development, their availability and capabilities may change over time.

  • This is a preview feature.

  • Preview features may have restricted functionality. These features are available before an official release so that customers can get early access and provide feedback.

Microsoft 365 Copilot in Outlook can now do more to help you manage your inbox by directly generating draft emails, creating and managing rules, as well as supporting many more triage actions.

Just tell Copilot what you need, and it thinks through each step and action with clear reasoning, ensuring you have visibility along the way.

Opening Copilot Chat in Outlook will enable “Allow actions” mode by default (Frontier only).  Users can choose to toggle back to the chat-only Copilot experience via the dropdown just above the prompt box:Agent Toggle

With your direction and guidance, Copilot can provide a wide range of mailbox functionality including:

  • Move emails from a specific sender to a folder

  • Archive messages you identify in chat

  • Flag emails for follow‑up

  • Create a rule to organize future messages

When will I see the changes?

This update is available only to users who are part of the Frontier program. If your organization is enrolled in Frontier, the new default experience will begin rolling out starting April 27, 2026, and is expected to complete by April 28, 2026. Outlook may need to be restarted for the change to take effect.

The new default experience updates your mailbox at the service level.

In some Outlook clients, these updates may not appear immediately due to synchronization timing between the service and your local mailbox.

For example:

  • Folder creation or category updates may require a refresh before appearing

  • Changes made in cached mode may take additional time to appear locally

This behavior can vary depending on your client and the current state of mailbox synchronization.

As a result:

  • Changes are typically reflected immediately in online experiences such as Outlook on the Web

  • In classic Outlook, the updated mailbox view may lag until synchronization completes

Things to keep in mind

In this release:

  • Bulk automation across large sets of emails results may not be comprehensive

  • Some tasks that depend on pattern detection across many messages may not be available

Support for additional capabilities may be added in future updates.
